In its recent report on "Overcoming Human Poverty", UNDP identifies four specific areas where attention should be focused when spelling out the ways in which governance and poverty influence each other. First of all, elections, at the national and local level, are an important way of promoting
accountability. Through general elections all citizens, including the poor and marginalised,
can exercise their basic democratic right to make their voice heard and influence the direction
of public policy.
Accountability, however, comes not only from voting every few years, but also through the
establishment of appropriate systems of monitoring and control that allow for a fair and
transparent allocation of government resources. Lack of accountability means that the poor
pay a particularly high price for corruption, as they often lack the power and the knowledge
to avoid paying bribes and to defend themselves and their own rights. Another way of

3rd of March 2012 - Citizens Bureau Nigeria - Brainstorming event.
United Kingdom members of Citizens Bureau gathered at Premiere inn, London Beckton to brainstorm, and come up with working ideas on various aspects of the vision and mission of the organisation.
The turnout shows that Nigerians everywhere (irrespective of where we are based) are still very much interested in making the country better, proffering ways doing away with the persistent negative image the country has, eliminating corruption and promoting accountability which in turn makes for a better life for the people, which are the foundation basis of this organisation.
Everybody present agreed and signed up to the proposition of setting up a formal UK branch to support and facilitate the take of the local groups in Nigeria.

It has become an incontestable truism that Nigeria’s educational sector is in doldrums. Even with the entire hullabaloo being made about “transformation” of the country, yet, the drums of shame in the sector have continued to resonate and the naked dancers are not showing any sign of fatigue.
